BY ACCELERATING STARTUP COMPANIES IN THE FOREST AND WOOD INDUSTRIES.

The Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund is re-launching the Forest Business Accelerator to provide forest business startups and seed stage businesses with a comprehensive commercialization curriculum and connections to industry experts, customers, suppliers, partners, pilots and investors.

This accelerator is for startups and seed stage businesses making use of low-grade material or underutilized species for a wide array of advanced wood-based bioproducts such as packaging, biochar, biofuels or advanced building materials, or developing precision forest management technologies that improve forest or supply chain operations or infrastructure.

The forests of northern New England provide countless environmental, social and economic benefits to millions of people who reside within a day’s drive. The Northern Forest that spans from Maine to northern New York is one of the world’s largest intact temperate forests comprised of a mix of hardwood and softwood. And unlike forests in other parts of the world, the Northern Forest is primarily owned by thousands of small family farms and individual landowners. The future of the Northern Forest relies on economic decisions they make and the economic conditions they face.

One of the best strategies to keep our forests intact for future generations is to support a thriving forest economy. Sustainable forest management combined with a healthy supply chain begins with landowners and those managing and protecting our forests and continues in cooperation with businesses that harvest, transport and process logs, manufacture wood products and use byproducts to create energy, packaging or other essential goods. Forest products are part of a circular economy that minimizes waste and maximizes efficient use, re-use, recycling and regeneration of biodegradable wood products.

But since about two-thirds of the wood harvested in the region is considered low grade with lower economic value, products that utilize low grade wood or underutilized species are an essential part of the overall supply chain. In recent years traditional markets for low grade wood such as paper and energy have shifted, causing economic challenges for the industry.

2025 Challenge Statement

In 2025, we are seeking start-up and seed stage businesses with products or services related to one or more of the following areas:

  • Products that use chips, dust, resins, shavings or other forest byproducts
  • Wood based technologies to create e.g. new materials, chemicals, bio-based products, structures.
  • Products that make use of underutilized species (e.g., poplar, birch)
  • Technology that improves forest industry operations, production, automation, sales throughout the supply chain, or forest management. This includes software offerings that make use of AI and other technologies to provide previously unavailable services to the forest industry.
  • Products or services that increase the use of wood heat or energy or improve its efficiency, either through new or improved fuels or heat or energy systems.

The Accelerator is managed by the Vermont Sustainable Jobs Fund and facilitated by ecosVC. Together these groups bring decades of experience supporting the economy of northern New England and extensive experience with companies commercializing and launching new technologies. The program will feature ecosVC’s Lens of the Market® curriculum which is uniquely tailored to startups and seed stage businesses delivering products and services to business customers who are connected to this year’s challenge statement and market segments. In the program, participants will engage with key industry players and potential customers, further their business case, business model, and go-to-market plans, and develop a compelling pitch for investors, partners, and customers.

Participating companies must have a product that is ready to be piloted with customers and may be pre-revenue or already generating revenue.

Previous Forest Business Accelerator cohort companies were focused on software, pellets, wood heat and energy, biochar, packaging, and value-added products and leveraged new industry connections, guidance, and mentorship to attain investment dollars, initial customer agreements and increase revenue.

a 4-month Accelerator for North American startups that are commercializing new and improved products, services, and technology in the forest and wood industries.
